John Gilbert Architects and contractors Stewart & Shields have developed a service called Passivhoos – homes designed specifically for Scottish social housing providers that meet Passivhaus standards and Scottish Government budget benchmarks.

The team have successfully delivered several Passivhaus schemes between them and have around 200 units in the pipeline. Passivhoos’ aim is to eradicate fuel poverty, reduce rent arrears and offer high levels of resident comfort and satisfaction. Design Director, Matt Bridgestock will explain the background to this initiative, as well as give a brief introduction to the Passivhaus standard and the projects developed to date.

Speaker biography

Matt leads the John Gilbert Architects team, he is an architect, town planner and Passivhaus designer. He is accredited by RIAS in Sustainable Design and is an Approved Certifier of Design (Section 6 Domestic). Matt is a former chair of Scottish Ecological Design Association.

His design work includes housing, community and non-domestic projects across Scotland. His work has won a number of design and innovation awards.

Matt has been instrumental in establishing a number of sustainability initiatives including the award-winning Hab-Lab building performance service, Passivhoos JV to deliver low carbon social housing and Sussed Sustainability which is aiming to decarbonise the School and healthcare sector.
